Dr. Shanti Pappu

Founder/Secretary, with interests in prehistory, palaeoenvironments, ethnoarchaeology, history of archaeology. Degree in law with specialization in cultural heritage laws of India. Involved in education for underprivileged children. She also holds the post of Professor of Prehistory at the Deccan College Postgraduate & Research Institute.

Shanti Pappu, is the founder/secretary (Honorary) of the Sharma Centre for Heritage Education (Established in 1999), a non-profit educational trust, focusing on research in Indian archaeology, heritage education, culture resource management planning and legislations involving cultural heritage. She completed her M.A degree and doctorate from the Deccan College Post-graduate and Research Institute, Pune (1996), under Prof. K.Paddayya, on the prehistoric archaeology of Tamil Nadu, and was subsequently a Homi Bhabha Fellow. She was a Charles Wallace fellow at the Ancient India and Iran Trust, U.K.  She has obtained several awards including the Prof.H.D.Sankalia gold medal from the Deccan College, and Young Scientist award from the Earthwatch Institute, USA amongst others. She holds a law degree with a dissertation on cultural heritage laws of India, and is a registered advocate. She has published two books, and more than 30 research publications in peer-reviewed journals, including Science, as also one book for children on archaeology and several popular articles. She is currently director of the research project on prehistory and palaeoenvironments in Tamil Nadu, including excavations at the site of Attirampakkam, for which funding was granted by the Leakey Foundation and Earthwatch Institute. In collaboration with RRSC-South (Indian Space Research Organisation), the Centre has been developing a management plan for prehistoric sites in Tamil Nadu, using satellite remote sensing and field studies, and comprising impact assessment, predictive modeling and conservation planning. She established the Sharma Children’s Museum currently under renovation as the Kolam Children's Museum in Chennai. She was consultant to the State Department of Archaeology, Tamil Nadu, and advisor in section on Archaeology and Palaeoecology (proposed) IGBP PAGES PHAROS. She is affiliated to several academic bodies and societies, and is Member, Global Library Committee, World Archaeology Congress, the Joint-Secretary of the Indian Society for Prehistoric and Quaternary Studies and joint editor of the journal Man and Environment (currently on sabattical). She is on the Board of Management of the Children’s Garden School Society and affiliated schools in Chennai (Ellen Sharma Memorial Matriculation & Higher Secondary School, Sholinganallore) and is involved in educational programs for children and teachers. She currently also the post of Professor of Prehistory at the Deccan College Post-graduate and Reasearch Institute, Pune.

Our Centre

We are a registered non-profit public educational trust (Estd.1999), focusing on research in archaeology & public awareness programs. We are named in honour of noted educationists, Dr. V.N. Sharma and Mrs. Ellen Sharma.
